How To Write An SEO Optimized Title Tag for SEO |
In SEO we come to focus on optimizing a lot of things, but we can quickly forget the basics of title tags for SEO and Google.
Yet it is an essential part of SEO and probably the most important part in page optimization. The title tag let your readers have a global vision on the subject of your page.
It is important not to neglect this title tag and to fill it as well as possible. Who has never wondered what the optimal method is for making great headlines? Today, after much testing, reading and learning, I have succeeded in building a technique that seems at least optimal to me.
You should follow the recommendations below. They will allow you to boost the search results as well as the visibility of your site as much as possible.
What is the Title tag of the page?
The title tag and the meta description are the showcase of your site's pages, the first thing search engines (not to mention Google) show Internet users in their search results. They are the ones that create the traffic on your website. These markup allow them to know the subject treated by the analyzed page. We can see it in several forms but it is generally composed of three elements:
The name of your website
A separator ("-", "|", ":" ...)
The description of the content of the page
The Importance of the Title Tag in SEO
The page title tag is in the top 3 of the most important criteria in SEO.
These are usually the first ones that appear in snippet form in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Page). You will understand, this is the element that receives the most attention: the first impression is always the most important!
If, during intense research on gardening, you come across a search result with a somewhat catchy and fuzzy title like "my garden in the fall" I don't think you will be tempted to click on it. I am even convinced that you will ignore this result by seeing a result with a more precise title such as "Tips and tricks for gardening". It is necessary to make the Internet user want to click on the result of YOUR page and not that of your competitor.
The title tag of your website should briefly explain the subject of your page, giving the internet user's mouth water so that they end up clicking and devouring your website. If, in addition to your page title tag, you manage to write a correct meta description, then there is no reason that the internet user (but also the Google robots) should be curious about your site.
How to Write the Page Title?
First, note that internal page titles usually describe the actual content of the page in question. Unlike these, the title of your home page is for your entire website. It reflects the overall content and does not relate to the content of the page alone.
It generally includes the name of the site as well as its usefulness, its purpose. Now that the differentiation is well done, let's see the criteria for a well-written tag.
When researching your keywords (an extremely important step in your SEO strategy), it is necessary to define a main keyword for each of your pages. This keyword must be inserted in your title and ideally at the beginning of it.
The size of your tag is very important. We recommend not to exceed 60 characters to be sure not to have a truncated title in the search results. In fact, the most important thing is not to exceed the length of 568 pixels since the engines look at this criterion and not the characters which are a clue.
It is therefore important to write your title to make it sexy and therefore more likely to attract clicks. Describe a benefit. From a marketing perspective, it is always more interesting to show the benefits of what you want to promote rather than just describing the characteristics. By describing the benefits that this would bring to the Internet user, you make them want to click. By clicking, it increases your click-through rate and you your conversion rate. To write a good title tag, Google has some rules allowing it to understand the title of your pages to show them according to the requests of Internet users.
- The length: 500 pixels wide, or between 50 and 70 characters. Forget linking words and use capital letters sparingly (because an uppercase "L" takes up more pixels than a lowercase "l", just as the letter i takes up less space than the letter w). If you make a title too long, it will be cut by "…".
- The message: unique, the keywords must represent the who and where and speak about the subject of the page.
- Keywords: put keywords, put the main one first, do not repeat the same keyword several times.
- For local SEO, focus your efforts on a city and add it in the title.
- You are welcome to include your business name if that doesn't make your title too long. Then separate the subject of the page from your name by putting a hyphen - or a vertical bar | (the vertical bar taking up less space than the dash) in order to break the sentence.
Optimizing the Title Tag for SEO
H1 Different from Title Tag
We have said, seen and reviewed it over and over again: the content of your title must be original in order to attract the Internet user. Like an appetizer intended to whet the appetite, it should make him want to click on the link. But beware ! It is better not to have the same content as your H1 tag (which is not always the case like with WordPress)!
Avoid Duplicating Page Titles
Avoid giving identical titles on multiple pages. The Internet user would then easily get lost on your website and would not be able to navigate to the pages that could interest them. Likewise for the search engine, it would see a lack of organization on your site and could not rank you in the search results consistently.
Use an SEO Plugin for Those Who are on WordPress
Finally, for those who are on WordPress (My favorite CMS), I can only encourage you to use an SEO plugin (like SEOPress or RankMath) to optimize your titles. First, you can organize the way your Titles are displayed. As seen previously in the "What is the title tag?" ", You can organize the display of your titles on browser tabs as well as on search results.
